Helpful information...
GIVIT is a not-for-profit donation platform that facilitates the donation of essential goods and services for people in need. We work with more than 4,900 charity partners around Australia to assist people who have been impacted by a disaster or emergency event, or are experiencing domestic and family violence, homelessness, financial hardship or living with a disability. GIVIT is an easy, quick and efficient way of donating directly to people and communities in need, without overwhelming councils and charities on the ground.
We’re all about inspiring and helping donors to give… the smart way.
GIVIT is all about matching generous givers, like you, to specific needs. We ask you to first search the list of requests on GIVIT’s website to see what Charity Partners have already requested for people in need. If you’ve found what you'd like to give, click the View request button to offer.
If what you have to give is not on the current list, it doesn't mean it's not needed. The Charity Partner may not have had the time to make a request yet. All you need to do is list your offer and include a description and photo. All our registered Charity Partners will then be able to see your donation, and if it's needed they'll get in touch.
You can always choose to donate funds with 100% of the money GIVIT receives spent on providing what is needed - and we purchase locally wherever possible!
You can even donate your time, and volunteer or provide a free service to a front charity or community organisation working with people in need.
Your donation is being offered to someone who is experiencing hardship, so we’re looking for donations of high-quality goods that are in good working order. This includes household furniture, whitegoods, digital devices, sporting goods and more. Please remember, GIVIT aims to rehome quality goods to someone in need, not remove unwanted items. Please make sure you have checked our Prohibited Items list before donating and never offer donations of opened toiletries, cosmetics, or consumable baby products.
There are a few things we need to say no to. In order to protect the safety, dignity and privacy of both donor and recipient, the following items cannot be offered or sourced through GIVIT:
- Any items requiring exchange of registration, identity documents, or legal transfer of ownership, including but not limited to: motor vehicles, caravans, trailers, mobility scooters (in states and territories where registration is required), real estate and accommodation in private properties;
- Items that are illegal or hazardous, including but not limited to: alcohol, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, tobacco, smoking implements and products, drugs, drug-like substances and drug paraphernalia, human parts, recalled items and items that do not comply with Australian mandatory standards;
- Medications, including both prescription and over-the-counter, however vouchers to purchase such products from local retailers are permitted;
- Perishable food and animal fodder, however vouchers to purchase such products from local retailers are permitted;
- Payment of debts and/or recurring bills;
- Illicit, inappropriate or pornographic material;
- Lost or stolen property;
- Animals;
- Raffle and/or auction prizes, or lottery tickets;
- Items intended to address need outside of Australian borders;
- Items that are on loan or involve an ongoing fee or agreement – e.g. rental of whitegoods, storage.
You can still pledge your donation into the GIVIT Online Warehouse so that charity partners in your area can view your offer to see if it’s suitable for the people they are supporting. Remember, there is no guarantee that your donation will be accepted by a charity partner. Your donation is more likely to be accepted by a charity partner if you offer to deliver it and include clear photos.
Having a photo will help the charity partner know straight away if what you have to donate will match their needs.
If you offer to donate goods that have been requested on the GIVIT What’s Needed list, the GIVIT platform will connect you with the requesting charity partner to arrange delivery or collection of your donated goods. If you have listed your donation into the Online Warehouse, we ask that you commit to leaving your donation listed for at least two weeks to give our charity partners time to browse what’s been offered and reserve goods. If your goods are not reserved within this time they may not be what’s needed in your community right now.
If you donate towards a current request, you will see the organisation has specified delivery options. Please consider these before donating (if the organisation listed only Drop off, you will need to arrange delivery). If the organisation has listed multiple options (Pick up, Drop off, Post/courier, Voucher) you can discuss with them the preference which suits you best.
If you offer an item and indicate you can deliver, you must then deliver the item (or arrange delivery) within the specified area. If you indicate the item needs to be collected, the organisation which accepts your offer will pick it up. If you offer to post the item, you will need to cover this cost.
Under no circumstances are you to deliver your donation directly to the person in need. If you are asked to do this, please let us know.
GIVIT is not able to assist with collecting or transporting your offering.
GIVIT has a robust registration process for all community organisations and partner charities that work with us. Organisations are screened according to the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission (ACNC) Governance Standards and underpinned by our own strong governance systems to manage donations made via our platform. This ensures that your generosity goes directly to people experiencing genuine need.
To access donated support through GIVIT, you must first connect with a charity partner who is able to assess your needs.
To find support organisations in your area that are already registered to use GIVIT, please search the organisations listed on the person in need page.
If you are a support organisation - charity, social service, school, community group, government or non-government organisation - you can register to use GIVIT.
The best way to help a community that has been impacted by a disaster or an emergency event is to check the GIVIT what’s needed list to see exactly what impacted people need.
GIVIT is the smart way to give. It means that charities, councils, schools or community groups do not need to sort through piles of well-meaning donations which can often do more harm and ultimately end up in landfill.
If you donate funds towards a request or a GIVIT appeal we will use 100% to purchase exactly what’s needed. We buy locally wherever possible to support the economic recovery of disaster impacted communities.
You can! Please email info@givit.org.au to request GIVIT's bank details.
If you donate using direct deposit, please include information in the reference field should you wish your money to go towards a specific appeal or disaster region, and your email if you would like a tax deductible receipt.
In Australia, your donation of $2 or more is tax deductible.
