A lesson in giving

We’ve never seen kids get so excited by the word ‘classroom’ until we met a family in remote, drought-stricken Mount Hope, 600km west of Sydney…but then we’re not talking about any ordinary classroom!

Delivered, all the way from Brisbane, on the back of a truck, this specially converted shipping container was greeted by two highly excited home-schooled sisters. Until then, the ‘classroom’ had been the cramped and busy family kitchen.

The parents described the generous donation by the Road Boss Rally team as, “a dream come true’. GIVIT were delighted with the outcome too, after struggling to fill the unusual request for a dedicated learning space. No real surprise though, when our ever-awesome charity partner, the Road Boss Rally, stepped up to take on the challenge – and nailed it!

Not only did the team purchase the 6 metre converted shipping container at an online auction, they also went to town on a 2-day make-over. They painted the exterior, replaced carpet with timber flooring, adding shelving and desk space, and installed air-conditioning. Additional GIVIT donations ensured there were plenty of books, stationery, and even some chill-out beanbags, to set the girls up for success just in time for the new school year.

The donation, and the big hearts behind it, proved a real lift for a family experiencing enormous strain in the ongoing drought with both parents reliant on the struggling rural economy for work. GIVIT Founder Juliette Wright, praised the inspirational RBR team, “This is the strength of the rally - they just make things like this happen. These young kids now have a wonderful space dedicated to their educational needs.’’
Rally entrants were later thrilled to catch up with the family - and see how well studies were progressing - during a stopover on the 10-day 2019 rally.
