GIVIT directs efforts to support domestic violence survivors
Since its beginnings, GIVIT has partnered with many organisations to provide support to survivors of domestic and family violence. Following the horrific murder of Hannah Baxter (nee Clarke) early this year, GIVIT has directed a large portion of its efforts toward the coordination of donations to help domestic violence survivors re-establish their lives, families and homes.

Support being provided
Just recently, GIVIT donors provided school clothing, bags and books to help a 28-year-old single mum of Indigenous background who has five young children. The mother was recently reunited with her children after completing a rehabilitation program. The family are also survivors of domestic and family violence. Mum is doing her best to rebuild a better life for her young family as she strives to connect her children back to school and find employment.
With the wonderful help of more GIVIT donors, a double pram, household items, baby and children's clothing and kitchen essentials were given to help a single mother of nine setting up new residence. She escaped with very little winter clothing and other general household items. Now her new home is almost completely furnished and she is able to live in safety with her family.
Most kids entering foster care don’t have time to pack, and have to leave their toys and clothes behind. That's why toys, clothes and in this case 22 pairs of boots donated by Pepper & Leo are treasured by kids waiting to join a new family and home. Toowoomba’s Hope For Our Children, which supports thousands of children, shared, "we often take for granted what a pair of new shoes feels like. For kids who rarely, or have never, received items or gifts, it's really precious and gives the kids a sense of ownership of who they are and their worth.”
GIVIT’s NT Coordinator, Tali, has matched thousands of donations with vulnerable households from Darwin to Alice Springs. But, an underwear donation to a remote Aboriginal family inspired her the most.
“A young mum with her three children had recently fled domestic violence and were residents at the Katherine Women’s Crisis Centre. Still breastfeeding, she asked staff if they had a spare maternity bra. They had recently received boxes of new maternity bras, singlets and underwear from GIVIT, and offered her a selection. The young mum asked which bra she could take, and the staff told her she could choose as many she needed! She was speechless and close to tears. This humble appreciation from a quietly spoken mother being given an item most of us take for granted epitomises the value of GIVIT, beyond the statistics!”
Donations of boxing equipment and girls clothes to Fremantle PCYC are helping many young people get through tough times and feel more connected. The PCYC helps vulnerable young people to socialise, improve their emotional intelligence and decrease engagement in anti-social behaviour. GIVIT’s WA Engagement Officer, Sarah, recently visited the centre to donate more than 100 essential items including tops, socks, track pants, innerwear and boxing pads, for their recently de-funded girls' program.
