Helping with new beginnings
GIVIT co-ordinates donations for many local organisations supporting the well-being of the most vulnerable within their communities.
In WA, we are pleased to work with the Wungening Aboriginal Corporation. Its valuable ReSet program supports the families of those incarcerated at Bandyup, Casuarina and Hakea and Wooroloo prisons. The initiative also provides post-release assistance.
GIVIT co-ordinated a generous corporate donation of 1,300 clothing items for inclusion in ReSet’s ‘release packs’. These are a key component of the organisation’s work in helping those leaving prison to get the positive new start crucial to minimising the risk of their reoffending. Thanks to a number of generous donors, the packs also include Smart Phones, toiletries and other useful items.
Stacey, a ReSet program worker, explained to Sarah Visser, GIVIT’s WA Engagement Officer that many families visiting prisoners have few resources - grandparents may be caring for grandchildren who are going without everyday clothing such as socks. With expectant and new mothers within the prison population, Stacey also flagged that donated baby items such as ‘onesies’ were very much appreciated.
