Laptop donation brings relief to Indigenous students
Students at a COOEE Indigenous Family and Community Education Centre have been given a helping hand thanks to a generous GIVIT donor.
These high school students live in a drought affected area and their families have been struggling financially. The students were told by their schools they needed to bring their own computer to be able to access and complete their school work. But with ongoing financial struggles, their families simply couldn’t afford this.
COOEE program manager Margie Kennedy said, "It was brought to our attention that a few of the students at a local high school were falling behind as they didn't have a laptop, which is essential to complete their school work," she said. "We couldn't afford the laptops for the families who are struggling, but one of our community networks recommended we register with GIVIT, and we are so glad we did."
COOEE staff supporting the students were gifted four new laptops by a GIVIT donor, which will help their students complete their homework and assignments.
GIVIT is the smart way to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities across Australia. GIVIT matches generosity with genuine need via givit.org.au to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have access to what they need when they need it most.
Working closely with schools, health programs, charities and community services, GIVIT’s National Indigenous Support Program empowers local organisations, like COOEE, to request exactly what they require for the people they support. GIVIT then helps improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by matching donations with their needs.
