MacBooks for a good cause
A wonderful Canberra couple, Shane and Karen Maher, of MBK Pizza, are changing lives with their generous hearts. Through GIVIT, they’ve now donated 25 reconditioned laptops to help others in need.
Shane and Karen trawl websites looking for old and ‘dead’ MacBooks to purchase, and then they work to bring them back to life. Once the laptops are functioning again, they scroll through GIVIT’s website to read the stories of vulnerable people who require them. Shane and Karen then wonderfully donate these laptops to help those people doing it tough. Laptops, one of GIVIT’s most highly sought after donations, make a world of difference to the people who receive them.
GIVIT’s ACT manager Caroline Odgers said Shane and Karen were a remarkable couple who were changing lives with their generosity. “The Mahers created MBK Pizza and deliver their MacBooks to impoverished people around Canberra in a pizza box as they didn’t have any laptop cases. Now they have cases for their deliveries, but the name has stuck and it’s MBK for MacBook,’’ Ms Odgers said.
Their milestone 25th donation was gratefully received by the YMCA’s Youth Space in the ACT. The laptop will allow young people accessing the centre to apply for jobs, write resumes, complete assignments and develop their computer skills.
Zakia Patel, Youth Development Coordinator of the YMCA Canberra, said, “Without the support and generosity from Shane and Karen we would not be able to give young people this level of support.’’
Among the 25 laptops provided to GIVIT-registered recipients, MBK Pizza has helped a victim of domestic violence to return to studies and she is now completing a double degree.
A huge thank you to Shane and Karen – you are changing lives.
