Outpouring of love for Queensland's North West

In early 2019 a record-breaking monsoonal trough drenched North Queensland, severely impacting communities from the coast to outback cattle stations. Working with the State Government and Cloncurry, McKinlay, and Richmond Shire Councils, donations made to GIVIT’s flood appeal - and all offers of goods and services - soon began to reach affected families in Queensland’s North-West.

While GIVIT provides longer-term support for disaster recovery, immediate relief came with thousands of dollars of vouchers for local stores, enabling purchases of grocery and fuel supplies.

While visiting the areas of Cloncurry and Julia Creek to update residents, charities, and government agencies on GIVIT’s recovery efforts, Juliette stressed that GIVIT uses 100% of donated funds to purchase essential items and, wherever possible, these are made via local providers:

“We know residents have suffered enormous heartache in these floods, including local businesses and traders who have been hit hard. Their livelihoods are at stake. It’s really important that we spend recovery funds in the communities and not bring in trucks loaded with items that could have been purchased locally. Everything that is needed urgently is available in local towns."

Juliette also flagged the importance GIVIT places on working directly with local charities, community groups and councils across the impacted regions:

"All these people are identifying exactly what is needed and GIVIT is providing the assistance to get people exactly what they need, when they need it most. Graziers and their families have suffered enormous heartache in this deluge. These stoic people had weathered years of harsh drought only to watch the further devastation brought by floodwaters."
